The following is a letter from the front office at USA Track & Field regarding uniform advertising guidelines. Athletes, please read carefully so you are aware of the different guidelines being applied at the different meets. Also read this Letter from the USOC about uniforms at the Olympic Trials.

As you are aware, USA Track & Field's Board of Directors in February took action on uniform advertising guidelines for USATF events, voting not to enforce any uniform advertising guidelines at those events. That action applies only to USATF championship events or USATF "owned and operated" events that are not otherwise subject to the advertising rules of the IAAF, USOC, IOC or other organizations. Events operated under the jurisdiction of the IAAF, USOC, IOC, independent event directors, or any other events not solely under USATF's operational jurisdiction, are subject to the rules of those organizations or event owners/promoters. This includes IAAF permit meetings on U.S. soil.

Most important, the U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Track & Field in Eugene are conducted under the rules of the USOC and IOC.

In the interest of assisting athletes to better understand how and where advertising rules apply during the 2012 outdoor season, and to avoid last-minute surprises that could negatively impact athletes, please see below for an overview of advertising rules and restrictions:

  • U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Track & Field: USOC/IOC restrictions (see Rule 40 Pamphlet and Letter from the USOC)
  • IAAF Diamond League Meetings, held on U.S. soil (Nike Prefontaine Classic, adidas Grand Prix) as well as all those internationally: IAAF restrictions apply (Click HERE for the IAAF rules)
  • USA Running Circuit (USARC) events: No uniform advertising restrictions
  • USA Fall Club Cross Country Championships: No uniform advertising restrictions
  • USA Race Walking Championships: No uniform advertising restrictions

All other meetings, road races or championship events: Check with the meet director for specific event policies or uniform advertising restrictions

Please carefully read and understand the USOC restrictions for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Track & Field, which are attached. In short, no commercial marks of any kind, other than manufacturer logos regulated in size as allowed by the IAAF, are permitted. Please see also the attached letter from the USOC that highlights the main points of the USOC rules and regulations.

If you have questions about these rules, please contact Jim Estes: jim.estes@usatf.org.
